Welcome Mostafa Hagog to Modular

We are happy to welcome Mostafa Hagog to Modular, who recently joined to lead our high performance numeric kernels, graph compiler, and low level heterogeneous runtime teams! These technology areas are critical low-level components of our AI Engine, and are directly responsible for delivering state of the art performance across many categories of hardware.

Mostafa brings a wealth of experience from leadership positions at industry leading companies including NVIDIA, Intel, and IBM, driving performance across NVIDIA and Intel GPUs and many CPU types. We are incredibly excited to have him join Modular, and are happy for him to share a few words about why!

A few words from Mostafa

I've always been driven by a fascination with high-performance computing systems. My career has taken me through pivotal roles at IBM, Intel, and NVIDIA, where I've had the honor of contributing to software and hardware designs that affect billions globally. Witnessing the evolution of technology, once a specialized field, now at the forefront of AI, propelling transformative changes across all facets of life, is both thrilling and astounding. My introduction to the core tenets of high-performance computing began with my Master's Thesis at the Technion, and it's fascinating to see how these enduring principles are now being harnessed to accelerate AI.

The immense promise of AI has galvanized a broad and diverse community of companies and researchers. They explore an array of technologies, both established and cutting-edge, in search of that elusive key to unlocking AI's acceleration. Hardware manufacturers, despite their deep expertise, sometimes struggle to adopt a broader perspective, often viewing software merely as a conduit for showcasing their latest hardware advancements.  With years of experience in the hardware sector, I've reached a pivotal conclusion: the challenge of accelerating AI on a grand scale will not find its solution within these confines.

Modular's bold approach to tackling the real-world challenges of AI acceleration is unparalleled. They don't just focus on the hardware but build robust technology foundations using high-performance computing principles—principles that remain vital irrespective of the hardware in question. Hence, the rise of Modular is not just welcome—it's necessary for the industry.

My decision to join Modular was influenced by the company's founders, Chris and Tim, and their profound expertise. At Modular, I've found an extraordinary concentration of talent in this field, which is both unprecedented and exhilarating. The culture here resonates with my own professional insights, fostering an environment where open dialogue and mutual validation of ideas flourish.

Finally, my leadership journey has taught me the indispensable value of culture in driving success. Modular's emphasis on a strong foundational culture since its inception has not only made it an ideal environment for my professional growth but also a beacon for attracting the specialized talent essential in our field. I am eager to contribute to Modular's mission and be a part of the monumental effort to elevate AI and, with it, the entire world.
