A New, Simpler License for MAX and Mojo

We’re thrilled to announce a major simplification of our community license for MAX & Mojo - one that makes it easier than ever for everyone to dive in, experiment, and build great things. Over the past few months, we’ve been listening closely to the community: in our Forum, via our Discord, at Meetups, and through countless chats and emails. The feedback was clear:

• Our license felt restrictive and confusing. Folks weren’t sure which parts were free, which parts cost money, or how MAX and Mojo fit together.
• Mojo should be free. As a programming language, it shouldn’t be behind paywalls or hidden restrictions.
• The barrier between MAX and Mojo was blurred. People wanted a clean, easy-to-understand split.

A new, simpler approach

We took this insight and just set out to simplify it. The result? A straightforward, tiered license that covers all the bases:

• Non‑Production / Non‑Commercial
  - Everything is free. Use MAX and Mojo on any device, for any research, hobby or learning project.
  - TLDR: No device limits. No hidden clauses. Just go build.
  
  
• Production / Commercial on CPUs & NVIDIA
  - Also free. Run your live applications, internal tools, or paid services on x86 or ARM CPUs or NVIDIA GPU.
  - TLDR: Full access to both MAX and Mojo at zero cost.
  
  
• Production / Commercial on Other Accelerators
  - Free up to eight GPUs. We don’t support other accelerators today, but we are quickly bringing up support for them. For other GPUs, TPUs, FPGAs, or anything beyond NVIDIA - we allow you can scale up to eight devices without having to contact us.
  - TLDR: Need other compute? Simply reach out to our team to upgrade to the self‑hosted enterprise offering, or for additional licensing options.
  
  
• Show us your success
  If you’re rocking MAX & Mojo in production for commercial use - on CPUs or NVIDIA - we just want to tell the world about your project. So we ask you to share your logo and a short story to usage@modular.com, and we’ll spotlight your use case in our marketing, on our website, and across social media. It’s a win‑win: you get free software, and we get to brag about how amazing your product or company is.
