Thanks for all the constructive comments on Jeff's proposal: Inferring Parameters from Other Parameters. The feature request came from the community, and your comments help to shape important language designs like this one. Stay tuned for next week's update from the Mojo language committee, about which feature requests we'll work on next.

Mojo has been getting discussed across social media over the past week. We published a community blog titled Outperforming Rust ⚙️ DNA sequence parsing benchmarks by 50% with Mojo 🔥. This caught @ThePrimagen's attention, and he did a reaction video on the weekend. It generated a lot of interest, and sparked some interesting community discussion. We released a follow-up blog on Monday: Mojo vs. Rust: is Mojo 🔥 faster than Rust 🦀, to highlight some areas where Mojo does have the potential to outperform Rust. It was great to see the hot takes about Mojo's place in the AI ecosystem.

Modular is getting ready for the first Mojo 🔥 release of 2024! There are a number of features coming, including new types for Python and Rust fans, improvements to the LSP, and far improved variadic lists taking advantage of the early implementation of lifetimes. That's right, lifetimes are coming! They're still in an early state, but you'll be able to experiment and give feedback as we build them into the stdlib.

Modular is back in full swing this week with a variety of topics being discussed. For lifetimes, there is still more work to be done, there might not be a full release with documentation this month. However, there is work being done to enable nightly Mojo 🔥 builds, so that keen Mojicians 🪄 can experiment with upcoming features before they're widely released. This would be the ideal way to debut lifetimes, so we can iron out any bugs before a wider release.

Some keen Mojicians 🪄 were still making commits over the holidays, in particular a lot of progress has been made on lifetimes and the borrow checker. Chris mentioned on Discord that work is almost complete to switch over from raw pointers to using references with lifetimes attached. One of our active community members sora asked for a blog post about implementing lifetimes and compiler internals. This is a great idea, and we'll aim to get this done over the coming weeks.

Modverse #14

We released some fixes and improvements before the holiday season with modular 0.3.1 and mojo 0.6.1. The download size and speed when installing Mojo is far improved. Mojo has been updated to make the @value decorator more valuable, it will now conform to the Movable and Copyable traits, so that you don't need to implement those yourself to allow your type to be used with a DynamicVector.
